In 1972, inspired by the King of Iran’s request, Mercedes-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch joined forces to create a military vehicle capable of conquering any terrain. The G-Class prototype emerged in 1974, with production commencing in 1979. Originally designed for military use, the G-Class also became available in various civilian models, including a convertible, wagon, and pickup truck, sold as Puch G in certain countries until 2000.

The AMG G 63 4X4 is a special edition of the AMG G 63 that features portal axles, which raise the ground clearance to 13.8 inches and the wading depth to 35.8 inches.
