Pope Francis on Sunday condemned the “brutal attack” on a Ugandan school where 41 people, mostly students, were hacked, shot and burned to death.

“I pray for the young student victims of the brutal attack against a school in western Uganda,” the pope said during his weekly Angelus prayer at Saint Peter’s Square in the Vatican City.

The attack took place on Friday night at Lhubiriha Secondary School in Mpondwe, Kasese District, about 350 kilometers (217 miles) west of the capital, Kampala.

The attackers, believed to be members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan rebel group, hacked, shot and burned to death the victims.

The ADF is a Ugandan rebel group that has been fighting the Ugandan government since the 1990s. The group is based in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and it is believed to have links to al-Shabaab, the Somali terrorist group.

The attack on the school is the latest in a series of attacks by the ADF in recent months. In March, the group attacked a police station in Kasese District, killing 15 people.

The Ugandan government has condemned the attack on the school, and it has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
