The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has announced four significant updates to all Kenyan banknotes, effective immediately. These changes are aimed at enhancing the security and authenticity of the currency, ensuring it remains trustworthy and difficult to counterfeit. The updates include:

  • Signatures: The new banknotes will feature the signatures of CBK Governor Kamau Thugge and National Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo.
  • Year of Print: The year of print on the banknotes will be updated to 2024.
  • Security Features: Each denomination will now include new security threads with color-changing effects, adding a layer of protection against counterfeiting.
  • Design Consistency: Despite these updates, the overall design will remain consistent with the series issued in 2019, preserving the familiar look and feel of the currency.

These updates will affect all denominations, including 50 KES, 100 KES, 200 KES, 500 KES, and 1000 KES notes. The enhanced security features include color-changing threads, holographic elements, microprinting, watermarks, and raised printing, all designed to make counterfeiting significantly more difficult.
